Lee Dickinson
President
Lee started his career in entertainment technology at the age of 12, working in his middle school’s theatrical productions before going on to graduate from Virginia Tech with a degree in Theater Arts. While at VT, he studied design and technology, and conceived and taught classes in technical skills. After graduating, he began work as a project manager for various local production companies, with the majority of his work with AVP. He became a partner in 2008 and took over as sole owner in 2016.
A designer and technician, Lee enjoys finding creative applications for presentation technology, and has a particular interest in events which require tight integration of various media. He has developed expertise in the core production areas of sound, lighting, and video while also becoming familiar with the supporting areas of rigging, power distribution, networking, and show control.
A company owner and a father, Lee still finds time for boating and flying and enjoys DIY projects around the house, keeping up the carpentry skills learned as a set builder.
Jared Merrill
Operations Manager
Jared is the linchpin of our company’s logistical success. He expertly oversees our operations from warehouse leadership to equipment and resource management. There are a lot of elements that go into running a successful AV company–trucks, gear, staff, and support. His plethora of handyman skills accompanied with his bad jokes, ensures that everyone is having a good time while systems are functioning and operating smoothly.
He’s our favorite nerd, and you can find him playing DND with his friends after a long work day.
Nathan “Possum” Firster
Warehouse Manager
Possum is our AV warehouse manager and is a meticulous AV professional responsible for the entire lifecycle of our events. He skillfully manages the maintenance and allocation of all our audio/visual gear, ensuring every piece is ready for deployment. With over ten years of experience, he’s the first to spot potential issues, guaranteeing the quality of every project.
In his free time you will find him at all the skate parks grinding his custom boards, blowing off steam, and showing the youngsters how it’s done!
Chris Theen
Production Associate – Audio Engineer
Chris is our expert audio technician, responsible for the setup, operation, and mixing of all audio equipment for events and installations. He has a Theen, ergh, I mean keen ear for detail, balancing microphones, speakers, and soundboards to achieve nice, clear audio for your event. He’s always got the best attitude and eager to find solutions. If he’s on your event, rest assure you’re in good hands–he’s got all the compliments to prove it!
When he’s not being our go-to guy, he’s out enjoying mixing audio for his friends and bangin’ on some drums!
Chris Ratterree
Video Editor & Camera Op
If there’s a frame worth capturing, Chris will find it—and perfect it in post. As a day-one veteran of our team, he brings decades of hands-on experience and an unmatched eye for detail and artistic storytelling to every production. From setting up the perfect shot on set to weaving seamless stories in the editing suite, Chris has brought his creativity and quality control to AVP and all of it’s clients since the very beginning.
Outside of AVP, you will find him soaking up the sun, playing guitar, and dutifully serving as the primary human to his beloved kitty, Goose.
Nicky McGraw
Production Associate-Lighting Designer
Bringing a vibrant mix of creativity and pure positive energy, Nicky transforms the stage and space into an immersive visual experience. His decisive action in the field sets him up for greatness under pressure. His keen understanding of atmosphere and visual narratives not only make him a great lighting designer, but an excellent gamer. On and off the clock, he is mastering his insights of real-time 3D space. As a result, these creative outlets constantly inspire his rhythmic lighting cues on set.
Beyond his audio/visual skills and gaming wizardry, he consistently spreads genuine kindness and optimism to everyone around him.

We offer full-service production for live events including sound, lighting, and video. How long as AVP been in business?
AVP started as a DJ company in 1981 by founder Gary Gauldin, but it’s current incarnation was developed when Co-Owner Lee Dickinson joined forces with Gary in 2001. The company has since developed and grown to what it is today, a full-service live event production and studio facility. Lee’s education (Virginia Tech) and fresh ideas have played a key role in quality control and the direction of the company since 2015.
Where do you service? How far do you travel?
AVP is based in Richmond, Virginia and works throughout the Commonwealth and the Mid-Atlantic region, with regular visits to New York, Florida and Wisconsin. Our customers often find our pricing competitive, even when substantial travel is involved.
How big is AVP?
Big enough to handle any event, yet small enough to give personal attention to every customer. We also have great relationships with many other production companies and have the opportunity to share their inventory to cover larger needs.
What are your Payment Terms?
We require a 50% deposit to reserve your gear and book your event on our calendar! Established clients are extended 30 day net terms. We accept most major Credit Cards, Checks, Cash, and ACH Wire Transfers. Do you own all the equipment you use?
99% Yes…but thanks to symbiotic relationships with many other production companies we can get anything necessary to equip every event. Two of our best resources are located in the same warehouse complex as AVP making cross rentals a breeze when needed.

While we are not currently hiring full-time staff, we do maintain a roster of part-time and subcontracted team members.
